Measurement
Parents: Your child will be utilizing educational math iPad apps as well as hands on math center activities, games and videos to practice the skills that they have learned in class along with completing formative and summative math assessments. Formative math assessments such as in class math activities, worksheets, or quizzes help me monitor your child's progress. The summative assessment will be a math exam or test. Students are evaluated and their grade or score is compared to Nebraska state math standards and or math benchmarks. It is essential that your child practices and studies measurement and how to measure different objects. The more your child looks at measurement and how to measure different things, the more comfortable they will be solving measurement problems. On this page I have listed and included fun and educational measurement iPad apps, games and activities that parents and children can do together.
Have fun,
Ms.DiPaolo
Students: Here are some fun games, videos and things to do that will help you learn more about how to measure things!
Measurement iPad App:
These are my favorite iPad games that will help you learn more about how to measure things!
1. Grade 1 Lite: In this app, you get to play a fun math game where you look at the different sizes of things. Figure out which thing is longest, shortest, etc.
Look at the picture below to see what the Grade 1 Lite app looks like!
Grade 1 Lite meets these Nebraska State Standards:
MA 1.3 Geometry: Students will communicate geometric concepts and measurement concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines.
MA 1.3.3 Measurement: Students will perform and compare measurements and apply formulas.
MA.1.3.3.d: Order three objects by directly comparing their lengths , or indirectly by using a third object.
2. Shoe Size: I think this app is fun! Have a parent help you figure out the size of your foot. You hold up your foot to the iPad and have a parent help you measure your foot! Look at the picture below to see what the Grade 1 Lite app looks like!
Shoe Size meets these Nebraska State Standards:
MA 1.3 Geometry: Students will communicate geometric concepts and measurement concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines.
MA 1.3.3 Measurement: Students will perform and compare measurements and apply formulas.
MA.1.3.3.c: Measure objects by using a shorter object end to end and know the length of the object is the amount of the same size objects that span it lined up end to end.

Parents and Students
Here is a fun activity that you can do together!
Draw Your Foot
Materials that you will need:
Colored construction paper
Various small objects
Scissors
A pencil
Glue stick
Students will draw their foot on colored construction paper by themselves using a pencil. Students will cut out the shape of their foot that is on the construction paper by using the scissors. After your child has their foot cut out or paper, glue their foot cutout to another piece of colored construction paper. Students are going to measure their feet with other objects or things such beans, cereal, art materials such as buttons, etc. The student will write down how many pieces it took to get from the bottom to the top of their foot.
